What is therapy?  What will it look like?

Therapy and the contract

Every client and therapist creates a contract to agree how therapy will look for them and the boundaries set for that space. Our first session will be around discussing this contract before we begin working together. A copy will be emailed to you before the work begins.

What does a session look like?

Each session is 50 minutes in length and is made of a beginning, middle and end. We will begin by easing into the session, sometimes reviewing the last session and finding out where you would like each session to go. The middle section is where we will explore more about the themes you bring then ending on a review of the session.

Every session is different and we can use different practices in each session. Sometimes it may be a lot of talking but also we can spend a session using creative therapies to explore your feelings with fewer words. Each session tailored to how you are feeling that day.

Confidentiality

Confidentiality is an integral part of my code of ethics. My understanding is that for people to feel comfortable talking about private and revealing information, they need a safe space to talk about anything you'd like, without fear of that information leaving the room. I take privacy very seriously and would only ever disclose personal information in cases of emergency.

Working together

The foundation of a positive relationship is trust, this is something developed over time during our work together. A trustworthy relationship is essential for clients to feel safe during therapy and supports the process of collaborative work. Our work together will establish trust and safety over time through certain behaviours and attitudes which match the individual's working model. My approach is to develop a non-judgemental space where you feel you can share all aspects of who you are without worry. This journey is taken together to support you in understanding of yourself, I will follow your lead on the important aspects of your life that you feel you need support with.

What are your goals?

Our goals for therapy are shaped by how our lives are in the present, working on what kind of person we want to be. Considering each session, what you talk about is whatever is important for you on that day. If you sought therapy for specific reasons then this would more than likely direct the dialogue of the sessions; these can help shape your own personal goals for therapy which can be reviewed together. Our lives are a rich tapestry of memories, experiences, relationships, feelings, dreams, thoughts and metaphors. Reflecting on all these elements requires the client to willingly bring them to therapy.
